NIFA Declares Fiscal Emergency In Nassau County
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Nassau Interim Finance Authority has declared a fiscal emergency in Nassau County after a vote Thursday afternoon.
The authority has rejected County Executive Ed Mangano's revised budget plan and instituted a wage freeze, which is expected to save about $10.5 million.
On Wednesday, Mangano announced a plan that would close the $176 million budget gap. He also announced he would lay off 213 workers and not fill about 300 other positions.
Mangano's proposal included over $60 million in employee-related cuts, and would impose a 13-day unpaid furlough for county workers.
NIFA said Mangano's plan was a start, but that there was a lot more that needed to be done.
"At this time today, the County still does not have a balanced budget that meets the NIFA statutory standards," NIFA Chairman Ron Stack said.
Civil Service Employees Association Union president Jerry Laricchiuta responded to the news Thursday saying NIFA would have to deal with the union's response -- litigation.
"The war and the battle against the lower middle class and middle class people is getting out of hand," he said.
