Nicholas Brooks Eyeing Plea In Death Of Swimsuit-Designer Girlfriend Sylvie Cachay
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A songwriter's son charged with of killing his swimsuit-designer girlfriend in a posh New York hotel may be considering a plea deal.
The judge mentioned ongoing "plea discussions'' during Nicholas Brooks' brief court appearance Tuesday. His lawyers and prosecutors declined to comment on the discussions. It's unclear whether anything will result.
The 25-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murder. He's due back in court Sept. 19.
Sylvie Cachay was found dead in an overflowing bathtub at the Soho House club and hotel Dec. 9, hours after she and Brooks checked in. He had gone out but returned after police arrived.
The medical examiner's office said Cachay died from compression of the neck and drowning and she had been forcibly submerged in the tub.
He told police the 33-year-old Cachay was woozy from taking an unspecified medication, and he had left her sleeping.
Brooks' father was the composer and movie director Joseph Brooks, best known for penning the Academy Award-winning ballad "You Light Up My Life." The elder Brooks committed suicide in May while facing unrelated sexual assault charges.
