NFL Twitter Map: Giants Fans Largely Outnumber Jets Fans In NY, Conn., NJ
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If there was ever any doubt, there isn't anymore.
This is a Giants town, through and through.
Twitter has produced a map of America that indicates football fandom by county. Each county's Twitter following of NFL teams is measured.
"We looked at the official Twitter handle for every NFL team and used their followers as a signal of allegiance (as opposed to, say, mentioning a team when watching an interesting matchup or talking about your rival)," Twitter data editor Simon Rogers wrote in a blog post about the map. "Click on the image below to explore the interactive map, which shows you not only which teams dominate states and counties, but also how their reach spreads across the country."
The map shows that the Giants dominate upstate New York, own the Jets in Connecticut and even have Long Island wrapped up.
North Jersey along belongs to the G-Men.
The Jets are the favorite team in Cortland County, which more than likely has to do with the fact that Gang Green holds its training camp in Cortland. The Jets' training camp could soon be moving back to Long Island, however.
It must also be noted that not all football fans are on Twitter (and not all follow their favorite teams), so the results might be skewed a bit.
On the map, the red represent the Giants and green represents the Jets.
A New York Times map published in April showed that the Yankees dominate the Mets when it comes to fan support in the Tri-State Area.
