Newark Shows Off New Police Daschcam System, Other Tech Efforts
NEWARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) - Three quarters of Newark police cruisers now have a new dascham system that records both the front and rear of the vehicle.

"It's going to create a greater level of transparency and accountability for our officers," said Mayor Cory Booker on Wednesday. "We as a city needed to go from the age of 'The Flintstones' to the age of 'The Jetsons.'"
It was just one of the announcements made Wednesday about advances at the police department in New Jersey's biggest city.
Booker also announced that residents can now report certain non-emergency crimes on the police website. CLICK HERE to file a report.
Plus, the city has partnered with a private company - SW24 - which links a businesses' surveillance cameras with police.
"It has already shown, in other places, by giving police access to private cameras, that they can push down the narcotics. They can push down gang activity," said Booker.
They are trying to spread the word about the new system, but Booker says there are protocols to tapping into surveillance systems to avoid invasion of privacy.
"It's not Big Brother," said SW24's Jay Stuck. He says it gives cops a way to see what they're dealing with before arriving on the scene. "And if the private sector is able to share those tools, then perhaps we can all benefit, in terms of more crime prevention."
