Newark Police Union To Vote On City's Proposal
NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- The union for Newark police has agreed to put the city's proposal of salary cuts to a vote following a public appeal by Mayor Cory Booker.
At a Saturday morning news conference, Booker was joined by Police Director Garry McCarthy and other city leaders in an effort to get membership to come to the negotiating table and avoid the proposed layoff of 167 officers.

While the city awaits the results of the union vote, the layoffs will be pushed back to Tuesday, November 30th, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.
The layoffs were to be implemented last week in an effort to close an $11 million budget gap. A judge had granted a 10-day stay -- which was to expire Monday morning -- before the new deadline was set.
Booker said the layoffs could be avoided if every police officer would "forfeit a couple hundred dollars a year in salary."
Earlier Saturday, the leadership of the police union said the city was acting in bad faith and that future considerations needed to be accounted for before coming to a decision.
The union said irreparable harm could be caused to officers if they set a precedent of making the concessions.
Booker said he wanted an up or down vote by the union.
