NJ TRANSIT Bus And Car Collide In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A car and an NJ TRANSIT commuter bus collided early Monday morning in Newark.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on Market Street near Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Police said the bus was headed eastbound on Market Street when it collided with a westbound Honda Accord.

NJ TRANSIT said the Number 34 bus was headed from Montclair to Newark's Penn Station with 29 people aboard at the time of the crash.

Police said the passengers on the bus as well as the driver and a passenger inside the car were taken to the hospital for treatment, but that no serious injuries were reported.

The driver of the Honda, a 19-year-old man from Orange, was issued summonses for careless driving, failure to wear a seat belt, being an unlicensed driver and other traffic violations, police said.

The vehicle's owner was also given a summons for allowing the car to be driven by an unlicensed driver, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
