Newark Mayor Calls For $15 Minimum Wage At Airport
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The mayor of Newark is calling on the Port Authority to raise the minimum wage for workers at Newark Liberty International Airport to $15 an hour.
Mayor Ras Baraka also announced the creation of an office to oversee the Port Authority. He wants the minimum wage increase plus benefits for workers at the airport and other jobs controlled by the agency.
"We want to manage it terms of how they are developing on the asset, the amount of money being made over there, how much the city is getting out that asset and how workers are being treated and paid," Baraka told 1010 WINS.
Baraka has promised since he took office in 2014 to hire an administrator to act as liaison to the bistate agency.
"Transparency will help strengthen our relationship with the Port Authority," he said in a statement. "It's fitting that we have a seat at the table when the discussion concerns projects that impact our city."
