Newark Mayor Booker To Announce 'Safe Summer' Anti-Crime Plans
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark's mayor was scheduled to announce anti-crime initiatives aimed at lessening the violence that plagued the city last year.
Mayor Cory Booker was to speak at a 1 p.m. news conference Friday on Newark's "Safe Summer" program.
Previously, Booker said all city agencies would be involved in offering recreational and employment opportunities for youths this summer. He also has said more police will be deployed.
Last summer, Newark experienced its highest number of homicides decades. The violence has continued this year, with murders and robberies are up nearly 40 percent from last year.
Last week, an off-duty policeman was shot and killed while ordering at a fast-food restaurant.
