Newark Hosts 3-Day Peace Education Summit With Keynote Speaker Dalai Lama
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Newark Peace Education Summit kicked off Friday with the crowd singing peace songs.
Participants were delayed making their way through heavy security at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Nobel laureate and Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi spoke on a panel with interfaith leaders and peace activists. The keynote speaker is Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker said in opening remarks he's honored to host the summit.
The conference is being organized by New York-based Tibet House U.S. and the Drew A. Katz Foundation.
It features 100 speakers and panels over three days on topics ranging from inner peace to improving communities.
