Newark Expected To Name 1st Female Police Chief
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark Mayor Cory Booker is expected to name veteran officer Sheilah Coley as the first female police chief in Newark's history, according to a person familiar with the decision.
The appointment hasn't been officially announced yet, but city council must first approve the re-establishment of the position of police chief before Coley can be named.
Three years ago, the position was eliminated under former Police Director Garry McCarthy.
Newark's police union president calls Coley a good choice who will lead well.
The city council is meeting Wednesday and is also expected to vote on confirming acting Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
