Police: 1 Suspect Dead, 5 Others In Custody Following Carjacking, Crime Spree In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police say one suspect has been killed and five others are in custody following a morning crime spree in Newark.
As CBS2's Christine Sloan reported, two of the suspects barricaded themselves inside a building on West Runyon Avenue, but surrendered with their hands up, laying on the ground after police and SWAT teams surrounded the building.
This, after police said the two and four others went on a morning crime spree in the city.

Police said it began with the carjacking of a silver Jaguar.
Katherine Carter, with the Essex County prosecutor's office, told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet the carjacking took place around 6:40 a.m. on Ivy Street in the Vailsburg section of the city.
"Officers attempted to pull over the vehicle and a pursuit ensued," Carter said.
Then, Carter said the car stopped and the six men jumped out in the area of Hawthorne Avenue.
"Three were apprehended. One was hit by the police car and killed," Carter said.
That's when the two remaining suspects ran into a nearby building before ultimately surrendering to authorities, Granet reported.
A victim was shot, but it is not known at what crime scene because according to authorities, the group committed a series of felonies and robberies, Sloan reported.
"Subsequent to that they received other calls regarding other incidents involving that same car," said Clara Rodriguez, with the Essex County prosecutor's office.
Police said they will be reviewing video recorded inside police cruisers during the chase to determine exactly what happened.
The condition of the victim who was shot is not yet known.
The prosecutor's office said a preliminary investigation uncovered two handguns inside the vehicle.
The spree of violent crime comes amid a spike in gun violence and homicides in the city.
When asked about what the city plans to do to combat crime in Newark, Police Director Eugene Venable told Sloan they've already put a plan to action.
"We put that plan out there already. I told you we have 115 police officers out here and as a result of that, that's why we were able to make an apprehension today," Venable said.
The five suspects, who appear to mostly be juveniles, have not yet been formally charged, the prosecutor's office said.
