2 Teens Charged In Newark Carjacking, Robbery
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two teens stood charged in Newark Thursday in connection with a carjacking and robbery the night before.
Rajahn Fitzpatrick and Tykeim N. Saxton, both 18, were arrested in connection with the Wednesday night incident at Reynolds Place and Woodbine Avenue, police said.
Around 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, one suspect got out of a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle, came up to the woman's vehicle and pointed a gun at her as he demanded her keys, police said.
A second suspect got out of the SUV and entered the passenger side of the victim's vehicle, and they drove off with the driver of the SUV following behind them, police said.
With police already canvassing Newark for the carjacked vehicle, a 29-year-old man walking near Chestnut Street and New Jersey Railroad Avenue was approached by the three suspects, who pulled up to him in the carjacked vehicle about two hours later, police said. The front and rear passengers robbed the man at gunpoint, police said.
Officers found the carjacked vehicle on the road near Tichenor Street and McCarter Highway, police said. When the driver noticed police, he began driving erratically, losing control and crashing into a traffic pole, police said.
The driver went on to hit a vehicle stopped at a red light at Irvine Turner Boulevard and Madison Street, police said. The occupants were not injured, police said.
The suspects got out of the vehicle and ran off on foot. Fitzpatrick and Saxton were charged with carjacking, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and robbery, police said.
The third suspect remained at large late Thursday.
