5 Teens Charged In Carjacking, Crime Spree That Left 1 Suspect Dead
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Five teens were charged Wednesday in connection to a crime spree that left an 18-year-old dead in Newark.
The suspects – between the ages of 14 and 17 – were all in custody Wednesday evening, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office. Their names have not been released due to their ages.
One of the teens lives in Orange, and the rest in Newark, prosecutors said.
At 6:41 a.m. Tuesday, a silver Jaguar was carjacked on Ivy Street in the Vailsburg section of Newark, prosecutors said. The vehicle was believed to be involved in a string of other crimes, including robberies and shootings, police said.
A victim was shot, but it was not clear where, CBS2's Christine Sloan reported Tuesday.
Police began chasing the car, but all six occupants jumped out near Hawthorne Avenue School, at Hawthorne Avenue and Clinton Place in Newark, police said.
Three suspects were arrested on the spot, but one – Tyree Crawford, 18 – was struck and killed by a police car, police said. Two other teens fled into a home on Runyon Avenue and barricaded themselves inside, police said.
The remaining teens finally surrendered with their hands up, police said.
The prosecutor's office said a preliminary investigation uncovered two handguns inside the carjacked vehicle.
The spree of violent crime comes amid a spike in gun violence and homicides in the city.
When asked about what the city plans to do to combat crime in Newark, Police Director Eugene Venable told Sloan they've already put a plan to action.
"We put that plan out there already. I told you we have 115 police officers out here and as a result of that, that's why we were able to make an apprehension today," Venable said.
