Crash Leaves 1 Man Dead After Carjacking, Chase In Newark, Police Say
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was killed in a crash involving a carjacked vehicle Saturday evening in Newark, authorities said.
The incident took place around 7 p.m. near the intersection of 16th Avenue and South Eighth Street.
The Essex County Prosecutor's office said police were pursuing the carjacked vehicle it crashed.
Witnesses told CBS2's Brian Conybeare the vehicle in question -- a dark colored minivan -- was driving erratically, slamming into parked cars and then lost control, rolling over at least once.
"It honestly sounded like an explosion," one resident said.
It's believed the man who died was the carjacking suspect himself, Conybeare reported.
The crash left debris, including a tire, strewn about the street.
Witnesses said another person took off after the impact.
"All you see was a guy running -- running from the police. After that, it was just total chaos," the resident said.
That person was eventually caught, Conybeare reported.
Several streets were shut down while an investigation was underway.
All police pursuits in New Jersey that result in injuries or deaths undergo automatic reviews under state law.
