Newark Cops Busy On Violent Day, Respond To Reports Of Armed Kids Cruising City On Bikes

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in New Jersey were looking for suspects described as armed, dangerous, and children.

Believe it or not, police in Newark responded to a call reporting three kids appearing to be as young as 10, committing robberies on bikes.

"They're all on bicycles, appear to be juveniles between the ages of 10 and 14. They just committed two armed robberies," a caller said.

As CBS2's Christine Sloan reported, Newark cops were put on alert on Muhammad Ali Avenue and on Lincoln Street to look out for teenagers on bikes terrorizing residents.

Neighbors said they have had enough of the violence, and most people who spoke to CBS2 didn't even want to give out their names.

"I just find it unbelievable, because I understand people are doing things out of desperation and hopelessness right now, but 10 and 14, they don't have no guidance, no direction," one resident said.

It was a dangerous day for officers. A cop walked in on a robbery at a gas station, shot one suspect and arrested another. Then an off-duty U.S. Postal Officer was shot in the hand after being approached by police impersonators.

Dispatch calls made it clear that police aren't taking any chances.

"If you come across these juveniles please use caution. They are armed and dangerous, and they are all on bicycles."

CBS2 checked with the Newark Police Department to see if they had made any arrests, and was waiting on a response.
