NEWARK, N.J. -- Newark Liberty International Airport is getting another overhaul.

After the New Jersey airport's new Terminal A opened in 2022, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey just unveiled plans for a new Terminal B.

Officials shared renderings of their vision for Newark's new international terminal, which was built in 1973. They're focused on improving access to get to the airport, parking, hotels and installing more art throughout.

The renderings show one idea to overhaul the network of roadways leading to the airport and redesign what officials called a "delay-prone" aircraft taxiway network.

"We are going to restructure both the airfield, the landside and everything else about this airport," Jacquelene McCarthy, director of aviation redevelopment for the Port Authority, said.

"A taste of who we are here in New Jersey"

Listening sessions were held with community members before the plans were announced, officials said. Based on the sessions, there will be more opportunities for local businesses at Terminal B, they said.

"Forty-nine million visitors. Sometimes their only opportunity to get a flavor or a taste of who we are here in New Jersey, in Elizabeth and in Newark. And I will tell you, if you go into other terminals, sometimes you will get the impression that you are in the state of New York," State Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz said.

The proposal incorporates ongoing projects, including a new access point for rail access to Newark and Elizabeth neighborhoods.

New Terminal A getting high marks

The Terminal B improvements became necessary after a record 49 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2023, officials said.

"It's super busy. So the security check takes longer," said Lakshmi Chalamalaseddy, from Middletown, New Jersey.

Newark Airport's revamped Terminal A has gotten high praise from New Jersey resident and visitors.

"The new one is a big improvement compared to the last, older ones, definitely," said Danny Lee, from Miami.

"Deplaning and carousel and getting our baggage, absolutely, yeah," said Kumar Dasgupta, from Minnesota. "Lots of restrooms."

All three major airports undergo massive improvements

Two years ago, the Port Authority announced a $35 billion effort to reconstruct the New York City area's three major airports.

Traffic problems that persisted during construction at LaGuardia, including travelers getting out of cars and walking on Grand Central Parkway, will be taken into consideration before work starts at Newark's Terminal B.

Officials did not announce a timeline or price tag for the project at Thursday's event. A 2-3 year planning process will begin in a few months, they said.
