FAA To Ease Hourly Flight Limits At Newark; Move Could Lower Fares
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- They might not get friendlier, but the skies over Newark Liberty International Airport will soon get busier.
The Federal Aviation Administration is easing limits on the number of hourly flights from Newark.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the airport and says the FAA's move should lead to more competition among airlines.
The FAA said arrival and departure delays have decreased significantly. The agency also said the number of scheduled flights has been well below the limits and Newark's runways can handle more flights.
The changes will take effect at the end of October.
Newark's largest carrier is Chicago-based United Airlines. United says it will work with the FAA to minimize inconvenience to travelers.
