New Yorkers Spend Labor Day Grilling, Shopping, And Watching Movies
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Labor Day is a day meant to salute the American worker and this year it gave New Yorkers a different look at Manhattan where the streets and sights were without their usual massive crowds.
Traffic was minimal, stores weren't crowded, and the borough looked half empty, CBS 2's Emily Smith reported.
The threat of rain did not stop New Yorkers from getting outside and enjoying some grilling along the Hudson River while others chose to head inside and check out a movie.
"The beach is fun I guess but going to the movies when it's really humid is better," Ariel Kerman said.
Some people hit the stores to do some shopping as the skies threatened to open up.
"I got a computer. We are really excited to use them," said a boy who had just bought a computer with his twin sister.
For some New Yorkers the day off was a welcome change.
"I worked last year. it wasn't very exciting. I labored on Labor Day. It's not fair," one person said.
Labor Day became an official holiday in 1894.
