New Yorkers Relieved At More Than 9 Days Without A Homicide
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A long streak of days without homicides in New York City may have been broken Friday morning, but many were still relieved at that the brutal cold coincided with less brutal behavior.
As 1010 WINS' Gene Michaels reported, it turns out brutal cold may mean less brutal behavior. As of 6:20 a.m. Friday, there had been no homicide in New York City for more than nine days.
John in Crown Heights was saying how much he hated the cold until he heard the homicide statistic.

"Hopefully it stays like this until, you know, spring comes into full effect," he said. "I'd rather deal with the cold than the murder rates."
The streak was broken at 6:20 a.m. Friday, when a woman in her 40s was found dead at 1202 Union St. in Brooklyn. It was not clear whether her death was a homicide; an autopsy was pending at the New York City Medical Examiner's office.
Meanwhile, police Commissioner Ray Kelly did not seem convinced Friday that the frigid weather was the reason for the lack of homicides in the city.
"You know that's always, that's sort of the anecdotal answer that we have in policing the cold weather or rain... sometimes yes, sometimes no," Kelly told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb. "It's always a complex issue. It's difficult to point to any one factor. But we're happy it's what it is."
"We've seen it where people who are forced to be inside as a result of the weather get violent," he said.
