New Yorkers React To Alarming Study About Domestic Violence, Rape
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A new report by a federal government agency reveals some disturbing statistics about sexual violence.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 1 in 4 women have been the victim of domestic violence and 1 in 5 have either been raped or are the victim of an attempted rape.

According to a summary of the study, "more than half (51.1 percent) of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8 percent by an acquaintance." The survey also said that 52.4 percent of male victims said they were raped by an acquaintance.

Women in the West Village told 1010 WINS' Terry Sheridan that while the numbers are shocking, they reflect a grim reality.
"I think it's true. I think it's real, sounds accurate. I know somebody that has been beaten by her boyfriend," one woman said.
Some women even said they believe the numbers in the study might be low because many women don't come forward when they are victimized.
"It did seem a little high, but then when you think about people who didn't come out, it sounds realistic," said another woman.
The study, which surveyed 9,000 women, also found results indicating that most female victims of a "completed rape" (79.6 percent) experienced their first rape before the age of 25. Furthermore, 42.2 percent experienced their first completed rape before they were 18 years old.
For men, more than a quarter victims of completed rape experienced their first rape when they were 10 years of age or younger.
