N.Y. Fans Furious At Empire State Building For Celebrating Patriots' Title

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If it weren't for the Seahawk's ill-fated play call late in the fourth quarter, some would be calling this the worst decision in the history of the Super Bowl.

We're talking about the Empire State Building lighting up in Patriots colors Sunday night after New England beat Seattle for its fourth NFL title. To make matters worse, the iconic skyscraper congratulated Bill Belichick, Tom Brady & Co. on Twitter after their wild 28-24 win.

It didn't go over well in New York, where most football fans would rather celebrate their hated rival's rare misfortunes. And much of the reaction wasn't suitable for a family friendly website.

The Empire State Building would have lit up in Seattle's colors had the Seahawks won the Super Bowl.

"Seattle had it last year and maybe they'll have it again in the future," Anthony Malkin, chairman and CEO of Empire State Realty Trust, told 1010 WINS. "I guess that last play made it so that the Patriots had it and not Seattle."

The powers that be behind the building said ahead of the big game that Sunday's score would be tracked on the ESB's tower and the winning team would shine for the rest of the night.

"We appreciate the fact that people react to it and the colors that they put up there," Malkin said. "Frankly, it would be great to put a New York team up at the top of the building, but we need to get our teams to do better."

"The Super Bowl lighting is a traditional lighting, it will take place every year," Malkin added. "We surely hope next year we can put the Jets or the Giants up there."
