New Yorkers Flock To Beaches On Memorial Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The beaches are beckoning and so are the sunbathers, seeking relief from the sweltering heat Memorial Day promises to deliver, Kathryn Brown reports.
Following a morning soaking, temperatures likely will tip the 90's. Thousands were planning to spend a much-needed holiday soaking up the sun and cooling off in the water.

"Come on down," called 9-year-old Denise Behrens.
The Cologne family staked out their spot before sunrise this morning. Why hit the beach so early?
"Beat the traffic of course," said Luis Fonseca of Williamsburg.
"Well we brought a bunch of stuff and we're going to just have fun on the beach," said resident Jaylan.

Nearly a quarter of a million people came to Jones Beach to sunbathe and catch the air show over the weekend but spokesman George Gorman said that's not a record.
"We didn't have a performance jet team, we didn't have the Blue Angles or the Thunderbirds this year so attendance was lower than what we would normally expect but still it wound up being a great weekend," he told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.
Over the weekend, sand, surf and sun were the perfect remedy at Orchard Beach after a long cold winter.

At Coney Island, sky-high gas prices kept many thrill seekers close to home.
And when the crowds stay local, so does their money, which is good news for merchants counting on another day of sizzling weather to line their pockets.
"All we need is the weather and the people will be here we're ready for them," said Coney Island merchant Paul Georgoulakos.
