With the race still going, the New York primary is consequential this year.

"Voters here don't get the kind of experiences that voters in New Hampshire do or voters in Iowa do," said Grant Reeher, who teaches politics at Syracuse University.

Now that could change. Voters will likely get the chance to see the candidates up close.

"It's our New Hampshire moment and we deserve it here in New York," said New York State Republican party chairman Ed Cox. "It's the first time in many many years that New York really is going to have a decisive role in picking the next President of the United States."

Cox expects both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum at the state party dinner on the April 19.

Romney is turning his attention away from his primary opponents and toward Democratic President Barack Obama after sweeping three more Republican contests.

Romney won primaries in Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia on Tuesday, widening his delegate lead over rival Santorum. He's calling the election a "basic choice'' between Obama's views and his own.
