New York City To Develop 'Forgotten' East River Waterfront
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City plans to spend $7 million to transform a trash-strewn beach beneath the Brooklyn Bridge into a recreational destination.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer officially announced the plan on Thursday.
It calls for a sandy beach and kayak and canoe launch along the East River.

"The re-development of Brooklyn Bridge Beach will transform an unused and forgotten stretch of waterfront into a premiere staycation destination," said Quinn. "New York has always been a city of water, and this project will re-connect us to one of our greatest resources."

The project will feature tree-lined walkways, concession stands, terraced seating and a spot for fishing. It also includes the installation of salt marshes to prevent flooding.
"East River Blueway is truly a plan developed by the community and for the community and I am thrilled that the transformation of this forgotten waterfront is now on the horizon," said Stringer.

Future plans include wading pools for swimming. Officials hope to have the project completed in the next few years.
The so-called Brooklyn Bridge Beach is part of a larger plan to open up Manhattan's East Side waterfront.
