New York-Born 'M*A*S*H' Actor Allan Arbus Dies At 95
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The actor who portrayed what some would would say was one of television's most memorable recurring characters has died.
Allan Arbus, perhaps most famous for playing psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on "M*A*S*H," died Friday in Los Angeles, the New York Times reported. He was 95.
"M*A*S*H" aired on CBS from 1972 to 1983 and was based on the film of the same name, which was itself based on the book by Richard Hooker.
Arbus was born in New York City on February 15, 1918 and, according to TV Guide, was a military photographer and ran his own fashion photography business before going into acting.
Arbus married photographer Diane Nemerov, who was famous under the name Diane Arbus, and they had two children before separating in 1959 and divorcing ten years later. Two years after that, she committed suicide.
He remarried and is survived by his his second wife, their child, and his two children from Diane.
His final television apperance was in 2000 on "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
