3 Bystanders Struck By Stray Bullets While Holding Candlelight Vigil In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Three innocent people became victims of gun violence in Brooklyn early Monday morning, hit by stray bullets while holding a candlelight vigil.
Surveillance video captured six men running from the scene of the shooting on the corner of Buffalo Avenue and Sterling Place in Crown Heights just before 2 a.m.
Police say the group got into an argument with another man and started firing.
The man was struck, and three other people not involved were also shot.
A 33-year-old man was shot in the chest, a 24-year-old man was shot in the left leg, a 33-year-old woman was shot in the back and a 49-year-old woman was shot in the right leg.
The victims were rushed to Kings County and Brookdale hospitals, where the 24-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were in critical but stable condition. The other two were listed as stable.
People who live nearby say the recent violence is terrifying.
"It's scary. This is why I told my son, you know, you can't be outside because all these things that's been going on in the neighborhood. It's unsafe. We were at the park yesterday, and the helicopter was actually in the park, searching for someone," Crown Heights resident Ebony Gourgue said.
There have been more than a dozen stray bullet shootings in the city since the beginning of June.
Police believe most of the shootings are gang related.
