WCBS 880's Levon Putney reports

"It's only that. It's an idea at this stage," says NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel. "NJ Transit has never taken a position on it."

"In order to advance a project like this, there needs to be elaborate study. There are concerns that we would certainly have around cost and the capacity of the system itself," says Stessel, who adds that the Port Authority (which runs the bridge) did, some time ago, ask for data to look at the idea, but that's all that happened.

The Staten Island Advance reports that Rep. Michael Grimm (R-New York), who represents Staten Island, wants the Port Authority to include a rail link in any plan to raise the road deck of the bridge.

The Bayonne Bridge is too low for the supertankers that will be heading this way when the second Panama Canal is completed.
