New Suffolk County Police Commander Says Multiple Killers Likely In Gilgo Beach Case

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The new head of the Suffolk County police homicide squad says he believes more than one killer is responsible for 10 bodies found on Gilgo Beach.

In a statement, Jack Fitzpatrick said he believes that based on the available information, it is very unlikely that one person committed all 10 murders.

Fitzpatrick's theory differs from that of former police commissioner Richard Dormer, who said in December that he believed the killings were the work of one person.

Police found the remains of eight women, a man and a toddler along Ocean Parkway. Police have identified five of the victims and say they worked as prostitutes.

Fitzpatrick has been looking over the evidence in the Gilgo Beach case since taking over the job on March 1.

District Attorney Thomas Spota has said he also believes more than one killer was involved.

Fitzpatrick said they are open to all possibilities.
