New Rochelle Police Chase Ends In Deadly Crash
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One person is dead and another critically injured after a police pursuit ended with a crash in New Rochelle late Sunday.
It all started around 11 p.m. when police responded to a domestic dispute on Fourth Street, CBS 2's Weijia Jiang reported.
Officers said when the suspect saw them, he took off in a maroon car, leading a nearby patrol car on a chase through the residential neighborhood, Jiang reported.
Police lost track of the car two blocks before the vehicle smashed into a brick wall in front of a house on Webster Avenue.
"We did hear the impact, my wife and I looked out the window and we saw an overturned car on our property," homeowner Dan Bena said. "It's quite unnerving to see two bodies on the sidewalk after having been ejected from the car, and of course the car itself was completely totaled, it was over on its top and it was crushed. It was a remarkable experience."
"I saw a person laying over there in the bushes and the ambulance and the police were working on them," witness Kim Spraitz said.
The impact killed a 19-year-old male passenger. The 20-year-old driver survived and is now hospitalized with critical injuries.
Their names have not been released.
The driver has been charged for assaulting his girlfriend and police said they plan to file several charges in connection with the crash, Jiang reported.
