New Rochelle Considers Nixing Free Parking For City Hall Workers

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson anticipates some ruffled feathers as he proposes a green initiative there.
"We realize there may be some entirely legitimate objections as people reflect the possible benefits and the possible costs and this is the way of starting a conversation about a potentially different way of operating our public parking," Bramson said.
Tonight, the City Council will discuss his idea - a nominal fee for employees to park at City Hall.
The goal being is to encourage employees to carpool, walk, or bike to work.
It's a nod to the environment and at least one employee can appreciate that, but says it goes too far.
"Please, already, we're not making that much money for the amount of work that we do. So, you cut back the staff, you triple the work, and now you want to charge us for parking? That's not fair," she told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams.
The way the Journal News explains it, the city would not make any money and the parking fee would then go back to those who give up driving, an incentive, so-to-speak.
Union leaders are already skeptical, but say they're willing to listen.
