New Proposal Could Privatize Northeast Corridor Train Service
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Republicans in congress want to privatize the busiest passenger train line in the country but Democrats think it's a bad idea.
If you ride Amtrak or NJ Transit, privatization would likely mean higher fares.
That's the feeling of urban planner Petra Todorovich who says about $100 billion would be needed to upgrade the infrastructure. But there's no indication any company would actually be willing to put up that kind of money.

"There's no examples of a private company coming in and spending that much money on a rail improvement project," said Todorovich. "If they did, they'd want a solid return on their investment."
Todorovich says ways to improve service in the northeast corridor is needed, including ways to provide more frequent and more reliable service.
