New NYPD Officer Honors Father Killed In The Line Of Duty

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In swearing in 781 new police officers this week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg singled out one new officer whose father was killed in the line of duty when she was just a youngster.

As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Bloomberg gave special attention at the ceremony this week to Officer Katrina Narvaez, 25. Her father, Lt. Federico Narvaez, was shot in the face and killed in Brooklyn on Oct. 18, 1996, according to published reports.

Katrina Narvaez was 9 years old at the time.

Katrina Narvaez said she decided to join the NYPD because she got to know so many of her father's police officer friends.

"I wanted to be like them," she said. "I wanted to help people, and they really cared about their jobs, and they really cared about helping people."

Her mother, Marilyn, called Katrina wearing he father's shield bittersweet. But she said she was proud.
