New Jersey Dems Seek To Remove 'Weedman' From November Ballot

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Democrats in New Jersey are attempting to oust a perpetual political candidate and pot activist who calls himself "NJ Weedman" from November's congressional ballot.

Ed Forchion, also known as NJ Weedman, said the move shows the rising tide of pro-marijuana voters that a mainstream political party is worried that he could siphon off votes.

"I'm a bigger name than their candidate," said Forchion, who is running under the Legalize Marijuana Party.

Democratic State Committee spokesman Matt Farrauto said the party isn't challenging Forchion because he's a threat, but because he isn't eligible.

Forchion said an administrative law judge invalidated 109 of the 208 signatures he submitted, leaving him one short of the required 100.

Forchion has run for governor, U.S. Senate and Congress. He was once apprehended by state troopers for smoking a joint in the Statehouse in 2000.
