New Haven Considers Making May 2 National Freedom Day
NEW HAVEN, CT (WCBS 880) - Declaring May 2 "National Freedom Day" is drawing mixed reaction among the members of the New Haven Board of Alderman.

Gina Calder, who proposed the resolution, says the idea is to commit this accomplishment to national memory.
"No, the war on terror is not over, but this is a huge step in the right direction," says Calder of the killing of Osama Bin Laden by a U.S. Navy SEAL team. "This is a message around the world that this is not just about what happened to us, but that we recognize that there have been many lives around the world impacted by terrorism and we're in solidarity with the world in trying to eliminate that."
Some Alderman oppose the measure, saying that commemorating the day portrays a celebration of death and assassination.
A vote on the resolution is set for June.
A simple majority is all that is needed for passage.
Calder thinks it has a good chance.
