New CT Law Focuses On Youngsters, Concussions
HARTFORD, CT (WCBS 880) - As kids head back to school, a new law is on the books in Connecticut to better protect them if they suffer head injuries on the athletic field.
LISTEN: WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reports
Under this new law, a student athlete suffering a head injury will no longer be able to return to the playing field after a short sit out.
Because of the increasing incidents of concussion, student coaches, by law, must take the injured out of play until a doctor gives the written okay for that child to return to the sport.
State Senator Martin Looney is a backer of this law.
"It will be incorporated into the training that anyone that has a coaching license in Connecticut will be required to have," Looney tells WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.
More information on the long-term consequences of concussions suffered at an early age prompted Connecticut to become one of the first states to enact this law.
