New Bulkhead Completed To Protect Shoreline In Bay Park, L.I.
BAY PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A celebration was held Saturday after a new bulkhead was built to protect shorefront homes in Bay Park, Long Island.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the bulkhead was constructed along the Grand Canal in Bay Park. Teresa Gaffney lives two blocks away, and still was not back in her home more than nine months after Superstorm Sandy.
"It was over the kitchen counter in my house. So I lost everything but my bedrooms," she said.

Gaffney applauded the new bulkhead.
""I think it would definitely help the erosion. It would help the streets. The bulk head is going to prevent the streets from shifting and going in," she said.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said the $5 million project replaces the old bulkhead, which was in place for 60 years.
"This bulkheading is not just even the traditional wood but it has sort of a combination of vinyls and wood. And so it's going to last even much longer than the traditional wood," she said.
A ribbon-cutting for the new bulkhead was held Saturday, along with a "blessing of the fleet."
