New Brookhaven Highway Chief Pledges To Plow This Winter
BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Brookhaven residents were up in arms five months ago when a massive snow storm dumped up to 30 inches of snow on Suffolk County, and days later, hardly any residential streets were plowed.
Now, four months after being sworn into his new position as Brookhaven Town Superintendent of Highways, Dan Losquadro has a plan to tackle upcoming snowstorms.
"By the time storm season hits this year, we will have 12 new six-wheel chassis 30,000 pound gross vehicle weight trucks, which are really the mainstay of our in-house snow removal capability on the ground," said Losquadro.
The new plan means a 16 percent increase in trucks, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.
Brookhaven Ready For Winter Snow
Losquadro further outlined the plan that includes a new radio communication system in the vehicles that will have a critical central dispatch point in the highway department.
"That system will be be interoperable with the Suffolk County police department [and] with Suffolk County fire rescue and emergency services," Losquadro said.
During last year's storm, Brookhaven's Town Supervisor Edward Romaine was away in Jamaica, and the acting Highway Chief was out sick. In response to those absences, Losquadro started to outline his winter vacation schedule in the summer. He also said they will make every effort to ensure his crew will be well staffed during the winter months.
"Myself and the people that I've put here are very hands on, very involved in the process and if we have to spend three, four, five days in this building to make sure we're coordinating those operations, that's what we are going to be doing," said Losquadro.
