Nets' Johnson Ejected, Leaves To Chants Of 'Avery, Avery'
NEWARK, N.J. (WFAN/AP) — New Jersey coach Avery Johnson was ejected from the Nets' Wednesday night game against the 76ers.
It turned out to be the most memorable moment of Philadelphia's 106-92 victory.
Johnson was tossed with 7:47 left in the third quarter after being hit with two technical fouls for arguing the lack of a call after Nets guard Devin Harris was stripped by Elton Brand.
"In the first half, I thought Devin made one or two drives and just didn't get rewarded for his hard effort," said Johnson, who was tossed by official Brent Barnaky. "The same thing happened in the third quarter. It was the same situation, the same person. I just had a difference of opinion."
Replays showed that Brand's hand never touched the ball and seemed to paw at Harris' chest. The ball was stripped and players on both teams stood and waited for a call.
When none was made, Jodie Meeks went the other way for a layup.
Johnson argued with Barnaky and got tossed for the first time as the Nets' coach, walking off the court to chants of "Avery, Avery, Avery."
