Nets Head Coach Jason Kidd Denies Spilling Drink To Gain Advantage
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd caused a stir with 8.3 seconds remaining in Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Kidd appeared to tell Tyshawn Taylor to "hit me" as the guard walked toward the bench. Taylor then bumped into the Nets' head coach, causing Kidd to spill a cup of soda on the court -- giving Brooklyn additional time to draw up a play while the floor was cleaned.
Los Angeles held on to beat the Brooklyn Nets 99-94 after blowing a sizeable 27-point lead.
The incident has been widely-dubbed "Cupgate" by basketball media. Kidd denies the accusation that he spilled the cup intentionally.
"Cup slipped out of my hand while I was getting Ty," Kidd told reporters. "Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball. So, in the heat of the battle, you're trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the Coke fell out of my hand."
The Nets have endured a difficult start to the 2013-14 season under their rookie head coach. Kidd has been under intense pressure and his job security has been frequently questioned. Through 15 games, the Nets are 4-11.
