Residents In Bushwick, Brooklyn Say Rats Are Taking Over
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents of the Bushwick section of Brooklyn have been complaining that their neighborhood is overrun with rats – and they said the city is not taking action.
As 1010 WINS' Holli Haerr reported Wednesday, it doesn't take long to see a rat or two in the middle of the afternoon – one fat, the other a bit skinnier – digging through the trash in front of the building at 266 Linden St., and then skittering away.
Neighbors In Bushwick Say Rats Are Taking Over
One man, Anthony, lives next door. He said the midday hours are not even the busiest time of day for rats.
"I see more in the nighttime, because nobody is outside, so when they see people, they hide," he said.
At night, Anthony said, the rats start to venture out.
"Sometimes they go into another building. They go into our building. They go into that building," he said.
Neighbors said they have called 311. They said the garbage cans are open, and there is always trash around for the rats to eat.
One woman said she can hear the rats scurrying around in her walls.
A call from 1010 WINS to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was not immediately returned.
