National Guard Troops Running Mock Train Derailment Drill In Westchester
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - More than 600 National Guard troops and airmen from New York and New Jersey were set to continue a massive training on a mock train derailment in Westchester County on Sunday.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is warning passing motorists that this is only a drill.
The troops will be reacting to a fake chemical spill at the Westchester County Fire Training Center and nearby Camp Smith in Cortlandt Manor, which is used by the National Guard.
Cuomo says troops will be wearing hazardous materials suits and searching for "victims'' of a mock spill that would threaten communities.
The drill, which began on Thursday, includes more than 400 New York soldiers and airmen and another 200 National Guard troops from New Jersey.
Last month, there was a freight train derailment on tracks in the Bronx used by Metro-North trains. The derailment impacted travel on the Hudson Line for several days.
In May, a Metro-North derailment and collision outside Bridgeport, Conn. left dozens injured and snarled rail traffic for nearly a week.
