Celebrate 'National Doughnut Day' With Free Doughnuts
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's National Doughnut Day and in commemoration, Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and other shops are giving away free doughnuts.
Originally created by the Salvation Army in 1938, National Doughnut Day was an effort to not only assist those in need during the Great Depression, but also to celebrate the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
The holiday is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June.
This year, you can celebrate by going to Krispy Kreme to get a free doughnut of your choice or you can check out Dunkin' Donuts, which will be giving out one free doughnut with the purchase of a drink.
Celebrate 'National Doughnut Day' With Free Doughnuts
Entenmann's is at the southwest corner of Madison Square Park near Broadway and 23rd Street giving away 40,000 free doughnuts and coffee. It will also be giving a $30,000 check to the Salvation Army.
"Like a magnet, I was drawn to it," an MTA bus driver told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "So I had to pull the bus over and come over and have doughnut and a free cup of coffee."

"There's nobody left on the bus, right?" Schuck asked.
"No, there's nobody. I checked twice, believe me," the driver said.
Other shops participating in National Doughnut Day are Cumberland Farms, Doughnut Plant NYC, Fractured Prune Doughnuts and LaMar's Donuts.
