Nassau Executive Vetoes Legislature's Removal Of Property Tax Hike From Budget
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Property taxes could still be going up in Nassau County -- even after the Legislature voted against the measure.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, first Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano proposed a 1.2 percent property tax hike. Then the Legislature voted it down and removed the increase from the 2016 budget.
But now, Mangano has vetoed the measure and added the increase back into the budget.
The county executive said in a statement that the $12 million in revenue the hike would raise is needed for health care costs and adjusted sales tax receipts, Hall reported.
The average homeowner would pay an additional $23 per year.
So what's next? The Legislature could still vote to override Mangano's veto.
