Nassau Property Owners To Be Assessed At Lowest Level
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Despite its financial troubles, Nassau County taxpayers got word Monday of some possible relief.
Property owners are getting their 2012 tax bills in the mail this week and County Executive Ed Mangano said those who have been fighting their assessments will "for the first time ever" have their bills "reflect the justice taxpayers sought with respect to their grievances."

The new tax bill will assess property owners at their lowest estimated level. Mangano said that should help end the dysfunctional tax refunds, which have been busting Nassau's budget to the tune of over $250 million each year, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.
The end result means fewer refunds and less borrowing for the county.
However, the changes won't help Nassau County this year because they are only set to take hold in 2012.
As for this year's $2.6 billion budget, Mangano insisted that he will meet a state-imposed January 20th deadline to prove that it's balanced.
Otherwise, the state could take over Nassau County's finances.
