Nassau County Reopens 3 of 6 Beaches Closed Following Wastewater Plant Malfunction
NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Beachgoers along Nassau County's North Shore can now enjoy some of their local favorites after the county reopened the sandy shores to the public Sunday.
The beaches were closed Friday night and all day Saturday due to a wastewater plant malfunction that released thousands of gallons of sewage into Oyster Bay Harbor, the Nassau County Department of Health said.
Bayville's Centre Island Bay Beach, Centre Island Sound Beach and West Harbor Beach have now been reopened to the public.
Soundside Beach in Bayville, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beach in Oyster Bay and Laurel Hollow Beach in Laurel Hollow remained closed Sunday, county officials said.
The six beaches were closed as a precaution after the bypass at the Oyster Bay Sewer District's wastewater treatment plant.
Officials said 125,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was released into Oyster Bay Harbor due to the malfunction.
Shellfish harvesting was also suspended Friday due to the run-off.
