Nassau County Pushes For Return Of Jets Training Camp
UNIONDALE, NY (WCBS 880) - Three years ago the Jets left Hofstra, the team's long-time site for summer training camp, for a new practice facility in Florham Park, New Jersey.
Gang Green, at the insistence of coach Rex Ryan, eventually decided to hold camp in secluded SUNY Cortland.
Now, there's a push to bring them back to Long Island.
Nassau County deputy executive Rob Walker believes Gang Green would fit in nicely with the county's planned $400 million sports and entertainment complex.
"This is serious for me," he tells Newsday.
But the Jets have already rejected the offer, informing Nassau officials that they have at least two years left on their training camp commitment.
New York was forced to ditch their 2011 Cortland camp because of the ongoing NFL lockout. Instead, Ryan and company will train at the team's practice facility in Florham Park.
Due to the cancellation, SUNY Cortland, already under contract with the team for 2012, will get an extra year tacked on to the the agreement for 2013.
The team however, says they would consider holding a one-night public workout in Nassau in the future.
