Nassau County Police Officer Shot To Death In Brutal Double Murder Laid To Rest
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A Nassau County police officer was laid to rest on Saturday, after being killed in the line of duty.
Bagpipes hummed as thousands of teary eyed mourners lined up for the funeral of Officer Artie Lopez.
"This is obviously one of the most tragic weeks in the history of the Nassau County Police Department," Nassau County Police Chief Steven Skrynecki told CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff.
Lopez, 29, was a member of an elite emergency services unit. On Tuesday he witnessed a crash and gave chase, he was shot to death by a driver on the run. The gunman then killed Raymond Facey, an innocent bystander.
Lopez's parents and sister were inconsolable as the left the church on Saturday; Artie was one of the most decorated young officers on the force. Last week he was amid a sea of blue that had helped lay Officer Joseph Olivieri to rest.
Artie Lopez was the first Nassau County Police Officer to be murdered on the job in thirty-seven years.
