Nassau County Police Discuss Security For Upcoming Long Island Marathon
BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Nassau County are developing a new security plan for the upcoming Long Island Marathon.
Dozens of state and county officials as well as race organizers met for about an hour Wednesday on how to improve safety measures.
Marathon Director Jason Lipset said increased security is needed in the wake of the deadly twin bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday.
"For the runners, so they know they can feel secure," he said, adding that there are 755 runners registered for the race.

County Executive Edward Mangano said some security changes will be noticeable, but others may not be.
"We'll be deploying our bomb dogs and electronic surveillance, sensor surveillance which typically we did not use in the past," he said.
The race is usually held on the Meadowbrook Parkway between Jones Beach in Wantagh and Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Officials have not said whether the route will be altered.
The Long Island Marathon will be held on May 5.
