Nassau County Begins Search For New Top Cop
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A search committee is being formed to find a replacement for Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey, who is retiring for a second time.

Mulvey, who started with the department in the 1960s, first retired in 2001. He returned in 2007 when he was appointed police commissioner. The 59-year-old says he first told officials last fall about his plans to retire, but waited until Thursday to announce the decision. It becomes official on April 1.
County Executive Edward Mangano named Police Chief Thomas Krumpter as acting commissioner. Krumpter also will assist Mangano in creating a search committee for a permanent replacement.
Police in Nassau County, where crime rates are low, are among the best paid in the country. More than half of the 2,400-member department earned an average of $150,000 last year.
