Nassau Coliseum Seeks Vendors With Long Island Flavor As Re-Opening Approaches
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Nassau Coliseum -- which is still under wraps for a massive renovation -- is looking for quintessentially Long Island foods.
The makeover doesn't look like much on the outside yet, but inside a transformation is underway.
The coliseum has been stripped of old seats and decades of grime. A new walkable ring has been carved out, and new luxury suites are being installed. Outside, windows have been replaced and a newly blackened exterior will be wrapped in metal.
As CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, a search is now underway for Long Island fare. The developer is scouting foods with a local flavor -- calling all farmers, restaurant owners, and vintners.
"We encouraged the operator to give local businesses a chance to sell their food here, so sign up nassaucoliseum.com," County Executive Ed Mangano said.
Arena food is not just burgers and hot dogs anymore. The goal now is locally sourced, and restaurateurs are dreaming up what they think the public is craving.
Smokin Al's in Massapequa is vying to be the official BBQ of the new arena.
"Pulled pork sandwiches, chopped brisket, pulled chicken, ribs, mac and cheese. We are famous for it," owner Al Horowitz said.
Passione in Carle Place is cooking up their plan to appear on the menu as well.
"Italian, it's gotta be something Italian," one diner said.
The coliseum is looking local for everything.
"We will talk to local farmers, see if they can produce a local cheese. It's applicable to this environment. We want to make sure it's small bites and healthy," VP Hospitality Strategy, Levy Restaurants said.
